Property Tax Prepayment Plan

The City of Chilliwack offers a convenient prepayment plan for property taxes.  Your prepayment account will earn interest, and best of all...the interest is income tax free!

You can make 12 equal payments (if you start in June) instead of one large annual payment on the due date. Although June 15th is the start date, you can join the plan at any time during the year and if equal payments do not suit your needs, your prepayment amount can be as low as $25/month.

Once you are enrolled, payments will be withdrawn from your bank account automatically on the 15th of each month.

Since the prepayments are based on an estimate, you may have a small balance owing on the tax due date.  Any balance owing on your Tax Notice will not be paid out of your prepayment account.  Please make sure you pay any balance owing by the due date.

Your total prepayments will show at the bottom of your tax notice as a deduction from the taxes owing and alternatively, you may have a small credit balance which will be kept in your tax account to be applied to the following year’s taxes.

The monthly prepayment amount for next year's taxes is automatically recalculated and shown at the bottom of the current year's notice. The first withdrawal for next year's prepayment plan is June 15th.

Please note that in order to sign up for this program your taxes must be up-to-date.

Don’t forget to claim your Home Owner Grant (HOG)!  The HOG is considered a form of payment and penalties are applied on late grant applications. All applications are made directly through the Provincial Home Owner Grant website at: www.gov.bc.ca/homeownergrant.

Payments will be withdrawn on the 15th of each month, beginning with the month you specify on the form.

How much will they be?
That depends on when you start on the program and whether you want the prepayments to mostly cover your taxes or not. Prepayment amounts can be as low as $25/month but are rounded to the nearest $5.00 (e.g. the next higher payment amount would be $30/month and so on)

To cancel prepayments, contact the City's tax office by the 5th of the month.

Balance Owing on Tax Notice
If your tax notice shows a balance owing, please make sure you pay it by the due date. Any balance owing will not be withdrawn from your prepayment account.

Bank Change
If you change bank accounts, contact our office to sign a new authorization form, or simply forward a new void cheque to our tax office.

Property Sold
It is your responsibility to make sure the conveyancing lawyer (or notary) accounts for your prepayments in the Statement of Adjustments.
Refunds are not issued by the tax office. You must cancel your monthly payment by notifying the City tax office. A new application form must be completed for your new property.
